INDIAN WEAVERS

                                 INDIAN WEAVERS

About the Poem

Indian Weavers are highly skilled in their work. They work hard from dawn to late in the night.
They can weave beautiful cloths for all the occasions of life viz, birth, marriage and death.

Weavers, weaving at break of day,
Why do you weave a garment so gay ?
Blue as the wing of a halcyon wild,
We weave the robes of a new-born child.

Weavers, weaving at fall of night,
Why do you weave a garment so bright?
Like the plumes of a peacock, purple and green,
We weave the marriage veils of a queen.

Weavers m weaving solemn and still,
What do you weave in the moonlight chill?
White as a feather and white as a cloud,
We weave a dead man's funeral shroud.

FAITHFUL FRIENDS

                                 FAITHFUL FRIENDS

About the Poem

Here, the poet defines a true friend and advises us to beware  of the flatterers who praise you sky high but their love is is only a show. They gather around you as long as you have money. They leave you as soon as your store of money is spent . Whereas a true friend will always stand by you through the ups and downs of life .Many people may claim to be your friend but true friends are rare to find.

Everyone that flatters thee
Is no friend in misery;
Words are easy, like the wind,
Faithful friends are hard to find.

Every man will be thy friend,
Whilst hast wherewith to spend;
But, if store of crowns be scant,
No man will supply thy want.

He that is thy friend indeed,
He will help thee in thy need.
If thou sorrow, he will weep;
If you wake, he can not sleep.

Thus of every grief in heart,
He with thee doth bear a part.
These are certain signs to know.
Faithful friends from flattering foe.                                                        _William Shakespeare

SYMPATHY

                                        SYMPATHY

About the poem

Sympathy is a quality of God. We should not be indifferent towards the sufferings of other people. Money is great but greater than money is sympathy. If somebody helps us with money, we can pay back money is due course. But the service done to us in sympathy cannot be aid back.

I lay in sorrow, deep distressed;
My grief a proud man heard;
His looks were cold, he gave me gold,
But not a kindly word.

                  My sorrow passed-I paid him back
                  The gold he gave to me;
                  Then stood erect and spoke my thanks
                  And blessed his charity.

I lay in want, and grief, and pain;
A poor man passed my way;
He bound my dead, He gave me bread,
He watched me day and night.

                   How shall I pay him back again
                   For all he did to me ?
                   Oh, gold is great, but greater far
                   Is heavenly sympathy.                                                                     _ Charles Mackay

THE MOUNTAIN AND THE SQUIRREL

                   THE MOUNTAIN AND THE SQUIRREL

About the Poem

This poem is a dialogue between the mountain and the squirrel . The mountain is proud of its towering bigness and looks upon the squirrel.The squirrel justifies its existence.It says that God created this universe in a very orderly way after a good deal of thinking. All big or small , rich or poor have a distinct quality and a definite place. None is superior or inferior. None should be considered as weak or useless .

The mountain and the squirrel
Had a quarrel,
And the former called the latter"Little prig"
Bun replied,
                  You are doubtless very big;
                   But all sorts of things and weather
                   Must be taken in together
                   To make up a year
And a sphere,
And I think it no disgrace
To occupy my place
If I'm not so large as you,
                   You are not small as I,
                    And not half so spry;
                    I'll not deny you make
                    A very pretty squirrel track.                                                                                                 Talents differ; all is well and wisely put;
'If I cannot carry forests on my back,
Neither can you crack a nut.'

THE NATION BUILDERS

                                THE NATION BUILDERS

Central Idea of the Poem

The Poem 'The Nation Builders' tells us that material wealth does not make a nation strong and great. The people of strong character build a nation. People who are ready to make sacrifices for the truth and honour , who are ready to stand firm and suffer, lay solid foundation of a nation.The industries and daring people make a nation great, and not the weak and cowards.

           Not gold, but only men can make
                       A people great and strong_
          Men who, for truth and honour's sake,
                       Stand fast and suffer long
          Brave men who work while others sleep,
                      Who dare while others fly_
          They build a nation's pillars deep
                     And lift them to the sky.

                                                                                                                                 by R.W. Emerson
